I learned a lot today about the importance of water. I have read over the years water intake recommendations and received some personally from my personal trainer; However, the information I read today on drinking water is different than what I have been told.
In the past, it has been explained that how much water you drink can be calculated with a simple formula. The formula considers body weight, medication, exercise routine, and other factors. Yet, the CDC (Center for Disease Control), WebMD, and ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal (American College of Sports Medicine) do not recommend the formula. In fact, they recommend monitoring water intake to ensure you do not drink too much or too little without any clear direction on how to really measure your intake.
According to Katherine M. Zelman’s WebMD article titled 6 Reasons to Drink Water, Zelman states Americans have been oversold the science of drinking eight glasses of water a day. Yet, the need for water is scientifically proven and should be considered when choosing our drinks. We lose fluids throughout the day as we urinate, poop, sweat, and exercise. Since our bodies consist of over 50% of water, it is important to replace the fluids as we lose it.
We can replace the water by choosing to drink a beverage of our choice, plain water, or eating high water foods such as fruits and vegetables (Zelman). A beverage of our choice means we do not need to drink solely water to increase our fluids; however, the choice to drink a low caloric beverage over a sweetened high caloric beverage is the key to weight loss. Weight loss is not increased by the amount of water we drink. Water can fill us up, but according to ACSM’s Exercise and Fluid Replacement article in the ASCM’s Health and Fitness Journal, weight loss can occur when we are dehydrated. Drinking water maintains our weight. Yet, drinking beverages that are low in calories increases our ability to lose weight.
So, let’s make sure we are keeping hydrated and enhancing our ability to lose weight:
